Dead Space REMAKE works GREAT now on Steam Deck thanks to Proton update and patch!
After a rocky release (at least on Steam Deck) a patch from EA as well as a proton update from Valve seem to have got it working great!
To be perfectly honest, I had been holding out for months to play the first Dead Space game! I had gone as far as to boot up the game, kick on the live stream and start playing – when a few friends and viewers alerted me to the fact that EA were on the brink of releasing a whole remake! Let’s just say, the stream was scrapped and the game shut down.
I had hopes of playing the remake on my Steam Deck! What better way to enjoy the thrills and spills of the Dead Space franchise – aliens jumping out of dark vents, shooting limbs off and having a good time all round and all from the comfort of my sofa next to the family as the wife watches her shows as the kids fight for attention!
January 27th was finally upon us, I booted up the Mac and with baited breath searched Dead Space Remake for some kind of review or first impressions only to be taken aback by an article from The Verge claiming how the game was ‘UNPLAYABLE’ on Steam Deck. It was so bad that EA explicitly went out their way to forewarn its incompatibility.
But thankfully that’s no longer the case! EA has released a few post-release patches which seems to bring performance in-line with what we’d expect from a title like this but the star of the show (Valve) pushed out some quick hotfixes to Experimental Proton as well – making the game MUCH more playable and enjoyable.
